Humble Pie

Before you read this post, this is the third post today trying to catch up on blogging. Continue to scroll down the webpage!
So as some of you may know I swam/biked/ran in a triathlon earlier this month. I feel as though I am in decent shape and felt confident going in to the race. I had trained for the swim and the run, but not the bike. Well, I was served a big piece of humble pie! This was by far the hardest athletic event I have ever done. It was a "sprint" triathlon so it is intended for people who have never competed in a triathlon to get a feel for it and have attendants at the transition stations to
help guide you through to the next step.
The race was a 250m swim, 8mi bike ride and 2mi run. To train I started running consistently and met with Lauren for swim tips. She also scheduled some swim practices. Now, the bike that's a different story.
I found a bike in my mom's garage and claimed it. We are pretty sure it was my Uncle Allen's so needless to say it had not been used in 8 or 9 years, if not more. I aired up the tires the week of the race and rode one time prior to the event. BIG MISTAKE!
Lauren and I stayed in Decatur the night before and woke up at 5:00am to a downpour. We originally planned to ride our bikes down to the race site but drove instead. The event coordinators told us rain or shine the race is on. So we see the bike loading station but no one is racking their bikes. That's because most are very expensive road bikes. Our confidence is chipped away a little bit because we both have borrowed mountain bikes. There are also many people in full out tri-attire. We thought this was a beginner race and now feeling very anxious as we are also in our Target brand race suits.
So we walked around, stretched, racked the bikes and the rain let up.
We start the swim and the nightmare begins. The pool gets jammed. Lauren and I pass 2 swimmers and at some points have 5 people in one lane. We get stuck, have to lift our heads, and I suck in water because the splashing is out of control.
We jump out and head to the bikes. That was my downfall. I couldn't switch out of the highest gear and couldn't pedal down the hill to gain speed for the next hill. At one point in time my bike stops mid-hill. I wasn't moving even though I was trying to pedal. I had about 20 people pass me during the 8 mile stretch.
The next was the run. During the bike my spirits were really down. So I jumped off the bike and thought, It's just left then right. I can do this part. I start and after the first corner is a hill. I wanted to cry. Just then my competitive streak kicked in and I eyed a person I thought I could beat. Poor girl was my focus and the only thing that drove me to finish the race.
It was the craziest athletic experience ever. I usually enjoy events like this. This I despised. Lauren and I actually had the same thoughts throughout the process:
  • I want to quit.
  • How can I cheat the route?
  • What if those cows jump the fence (we were in Decatur).
  • Had splitting headaches
  • Wanted to cry.
  • Then literally in prayer thanked God for the rain. If it was 100 degrees outside I probably wouldn't have completed it.

Here we are pre-race and all geared up.

Just after the race. The medals did help you to finish accomplished.
Back at the hotel and ready to go eat a massive breakfast.
All-in-all we placed really high considering it was the first triathlon. I finished 30th out of 100 and completed the course in 1 hour and 7 minutes. The first place racer finished in 55 minutes. She probably also didn't have a rusted mountain bike. Lauren is trying to convince me to do another on in October, but I don't think it will happen.

Here's to Two

This post is a little late but here are Eli's 2-year stats:
Weight: 29 lbs 8 oz -- 68th percentile, he weighs more than 68% of 2 yr olds.
Height: 36.75 inches - 95th percentile, he is taller than most kids his age.
So if the old wives tale is true, as an adult he will be around 6'2. He is the average height of a 3-year-old and weight of a two-and-a-half year old toddler. It doesn't surprise me since he was a tall and skinny dude from the beginning.
Here are some of the fun things he does:
  • He answers Yep instead of Yes
  • He is putting together 2-4 word sentences. Most are: Eat this; Mommy, I'm all done; Daddy, why'd you do that?, Play dis, Go outside, C'mone, and more and more.
  • He is a parrot. We have to be careful of what and how we say things, watch and listen to. The other day he chimed in on a Top 40 song. I guess I will be trading in my Kiss FM for kid's CDs.
  • His imagination is running wild, literally. He loves to pretend he is a lion. He goes around the house roaring at the dogs, toys, parents and kids in public.
  • He is obsessed with Toy Story. He has a Buzz and Woody that come with him everywhere.
  • He loves to be outside. We swim every day since it's so hot but he likes to use sidewalk chalk, go on hikes in the park, swing, slide and just be a boy.
  • He is still a foodie. He loves sausage, steak, butternut squash, grapes, watermelon, black beans and like every good Texan, chips and queso. Only we substitute the chips with Club cracker minis.

Now, the sad thing is he has started to throw temper tantrums. It is awful! And it's always over weird little things. We left for Vegas and came back to a different child. I thought about escaping to Vegas again.

He is definitely testing us right now so we have to stay strong. Neither one of us have given in to his demands but it sure is frustrating. So if it comes to mind say a little prayer for us! Patience and obedience is much needed for all three of us :)

Vegas

We went to Vegas with a group of 8 friends for a sort-of birthday trip. We checked prices and the best time just happened to be the weekend before I turned 30. We had an awesome time. It was only my second time to go, but I think I'm hooked. It's probably because I was winner this time!
A few of us went to go see the Cirque du Soleil production Love. It's a Beatles tribute and was amazing. I don't even know how to describe it. There were acrobats coming from the ceiling, out of the floor, stage left, stage right, dancing, cars, trampolines. It was sensory overload AND I loved it! I would definitely recommend it.
We also rented a cabana one day for some much needed pool time. I don't know what the difference between a 101 degree dry heat and Texas heat but it was hot! The cabana was fully stocked with snacks, sodas, water, juice, fruit and cheese, and at the end the attendants brought our group all the extra fruit and cheese trays from the cabanas that were not sold. We devoured it all!
The cabana came with a couch, 2 chaise loungers, a table, TV, misters and a hostess that brought us anything extra we needed. The pool was packed so it was nice to have a cabana oasis to escape to.
We also met this really creepy guy we named "Ronnie" after Jersey Shore but he actually got us a hook-up to hang at the adults-only pool for free. So it worked out. It was the "Hot Spot" of Vegas. This was the best people watching spot, hands down.
And what Vegas trip would be complete without a limo ride? We rode in the limo for one hour up and down the strip to see all the casinos. We were high rollers...or at least we can pretend!
This was Brent's first limo ride since prom! Hee-hee!

Viva Las Vegas!

All-in-all it was one of the best ways to celebrate starting the next decade of life.

Where Did July Go?

Where did the month of July go? No, seriously, where did it go? I guess between the parties, work and family it slipped by.
Well, here is a July wrap-up.
BRENT TURNED 30! I'm enjoying these last few weeks teasing him that we are in different decades and have nothing in common.
So to welcome in a new decade I hosted a surprise party for him AND it was actually surprise. All of our friends dressed up as their "Favorite Brent." We had work-at-home Brent, golf Brent, Mexico Brent, Wrangler Brent, Fiji Brent, the list could go on.
Surprise! Please note Eli crying in the background. He was surprised, too!
Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday Daddy!

Next Birthday was Eli's. My little baby is now a little kid. That's what we tell him at least.
Our b-day tradition is for the birthday boy to pick his own breakfast. Last year it was blueberry muffins, this year. . . donut holes. Not the best choice, but it was a special occasion.
B-day morning. What a happy boy!
Talking about donut holes.
The next day was party time. We had a sports themed party where all guests were to wear their favorite team t-shirt. We had TCU, Cowboys, Rangers fans and more.
Our family.
The cake -- by Jen Fisher, of course!
Eli enjoyed being sung to by everyone.
He also enjoyed opening a TON of presents!
Then some pool time to work off the sugar high from cake and juice.

All-in-all July was by far the best month of the summer!
